What Linux OS do you use?
Do you start the application in the terminal or did you embed it in the GNOME panel?
If you use the application in the terminal, could you please look for lines starting with <hash> and post the most recent such line, one line before and one line after.

Wait, you said it in the subject line: Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't have a GNOME panel, so the only way you could have started it is from the command line.

BTW: I just yesterday looked into how rescuetime uploader can integrate with Ubuntu 11.10 menu system and that will require some work. It won't work with the current version.

Ok. I'm planning to make it work for Ubuntu 11.10 after it works in KDE (unless my usage patterns change). Please check again in a month or two. In the meantime, you can do what I do: you can use it from a Terminal window.

Is there any update on this? I'm encountering a similar problem in 12.04: I've installed the uploader, and running it from the command line, it correctly identifies the currently running application, but the RescueTime setup wizard (https://www.rescuetime.com/download?activated=no) refuses to acknowledge that it's been set up.

How is the verification supposed to work? What could be interfering with that process?

I have a similar problem on Ubuntu 16.04.
RescueTime version 2.9.11.1285.
