Just the files please

Asked by Pieter J. Kersten (EduSense BV)

Is there a way to drop the dependency of OpenOffice.org and just process the files in XML? Like OOoPy does, for example? This would greatly reduce the server footprint for this module and speed up things in the process. The user gets more liberties as well, as he/she can decide what to do with the document - print it (using OpenOffice.org), save it, mail it, sign it, encrypt it, whatever.

Hi, Pieter!
we have realized that already... when I have read your post couple of days ago, we have been working to separate the engine in two modules... :) So if several people have the same idea, it should be good idea.

Well, now you can use engine without OOo if you do not need PDF output. If you need PDF, you have to install report_openoffice_pdf module and then you will be able to set PDF output. I think this is fair enough - to have feature, but have it optional.

Give it a try, we have added slightly better error reporting for troubleshooting the OOo connection.

Best regards,

Hi Sraps,

Great to see you were this far already.

I gave it a try. It looks very usefull, but the separation from openoffice is not yet complete - report_openoffice it is still depending on python-openoffice, which requires Openoffice.org-core, -pyuno and -ure, which cascades to 133MB of now unwanted software....

Can you manage without python-openoffice?

Can you help with this problem?
