Redshift compatibility with Mir or Wayland ?

Asked by Jooj

Thanks for this wonderful program. I'm really addict to it (I cannot see my new blue screen laptop more than 1 hour without it) and I'm a little worried about the fact that future of ubuntu and linux in general will be without X11/Xorg (wayland for gnome or Mir for Ubuntu Unity). Is redshift compatible with Mir or Wayland ?

Redshift is not immediately compatible, however, it seems that there is currently being added some color management support to Weston (see for example this very recent commit http://cgit.freedesktop.org/wayland/weston/commit/?id=b24e48e2ffbc499b940942bbc52b4fe636c14b58). I think it is likely that this will allow the gamma ramps to be configured and this will possibly allow the same kind of "hack" that Redshift currently uses to change the color in the X server using the gamma ramps. It is also possible, and perhaps more preferable, that some other solution is investigated which does not interfere so much with gamma ramps and color management. I will keep trying to follow this issue as these technologies mature to see if a solution becomes available.
