Apparently Loads Data Files but No View

Asked by Thomas Alldread on 2019-04-13

I have been using RedNoteBook for a number of years under Windows 10 and until now the program has performed well. The notebook directory the directory lists many files named by Y-M.txt. The files look normal in a text editor. The RedNoteBook log indicates the files are all loaded when RedNoteBook is started. File>Open results in the same action. But the screen is blank as if there is no data base loaded.

I updated to version 2.11.1 with the same result.

The final 3 log statements are:

2019-04-12 18:26:59,551 DEBUG RedNotebook-Backup-RedNotebookData-2017-01-11.zip is not a valid month filename
2019-04-12 18:26:59,551 DEBUG Finished loading files in dir "D:\TMA\TMA's Documents\RedNotebookData"
2019-04-12 18:26:59,554 DEBUG Add mathjax code: False

The "Insert" and "Template" and "Format" menu items are greyed out.

It acts as if my whole database is filtered out but there isn't any search box shown.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Can it be that you're simply in preview mode on an empty day?

You may want to temporarily rename the configuration.cfg file to let
RedNotebook start with the default config.

If that does not help, I recommend backing up your data, then trying
inserting the month files one by one (or in batches) to see if a corrupt
month file is the problem.

Thanks Jendrik Seipp, that solved my question.

Greetings Jendrik,

Many thanks!!! I don't think I would have found this without your help. The upgrade to the latest version appeared to un-install the old version and the new install did not repair the problem. I guess it must have left the old config file in tact. The old problem config file is below. There must be an error in it but to me it is not obvious.

Thanks Again,

Greetings,

I should also comment that it is very possible that it was stuck viewing a day without any data but there was no way to change the view day as there was no calendar. I did switch between preview and edit but everything remained blank. Possibly there is something missing from the config file that prevented the calendar from showing. I wonder if this is a bug?

In any event it seemed stuck on a blank page and I don't believe a regular user could change anything just using the GUI to restore the service as I spent quite a bit of time trying all the menu options that were not disabled.

The problem is easy to reproduce as if I change back to the aforementioned config file it re-occurs.

      Hope this info is helpful.

Thanks, that's helpful indeed. I think the value "leftDividerPosition=1" was just too low.

Greetings Jendrik,

I suspect I may have dragged the partition all the way left to view some long text and may have closed the program without moving it back into view. Possibly a minimum limit of something like 10 would prevent the left side view space from becoming completely closed. I don't recall trying to drag it back (which might have worked) as I didn't realize it was there but just hidden.

Glad to hear the info was helpful - keep up the good work!
