Word Cloud not showing in Windows Version 2.2

Asked by Martin

Hi,

I've installed the latest 2.2 Windows Version of RedNotebook, unfortunately the word cloud is not showing up at all, there is just blank space. I've tried the latest portable version, which seems to be Version 1.15 and there everything is working fine. Any suggestions? I'm running a Windows 8.1 x64 machine. It seems to be a windows related issue, since on my Linux Mint machine also the 2.2 Version is running fine. Any help would be appreciated!

The word cloud had to be removed on Windows since there is no up-to-date
GTKWebkit for Windows.

Thank you for this information. But what's then the use of the new version for windows? The old 1.15 is running fine and supports the word cloud feature so I'm a little bit confused since new versions should usually implement more features to my understanding, not remove essential ones? Are there plans to implement the word cloud again in windows version? And am I running into trouble by editing the same journal with different versions (2.2 linux mint notebook, 1.15 windows)? Thanks in advance.

You're right, usually new versions add features :-) In this case,
however, I had to update the underlying WebkitGTK library, since the old
one was unmaintained and full of security holes. Unfortunately, the new
library doesn't work on Windows. Maybe I'll use a different library
(based on Chromium) on Windows in the future, but for now I thought
reducing the feature set on Windows is better than having no new Windows
releases, since of course RedNotebook gets new features in other parts
of the application.

The file format of RedNotebook has not changed, so you can open and edit
your journals with either versions 1.x or 2.x.

@Jendrikseipp : honestly speaking, what other features are so useful, to release a new version w/o word cloud ?

Do you have an idea, when you are going to switch to chromium ?
