RedNotebook fails to start

Asked by Asen Anastassov on 2016-03-09

Hello,

RedNotebook fails to initiate on my machine (Windows 8 x64)- the process appears for a few seconds in the task manager and closes so fast that I can't even create a dump file. Are there any special requirements for running RedNotebook on Windows? Any suggestion would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No, there aren't any special requirements. Maybe you can find something
useful in the log at C:\Users\<username>\.rednotebook/rednotebook.log ?

@Jendrik Seipp
In fact months ago I had the same problem but I thought it had been caused by my system. I didn't find any 'rednotebook.log' file. I could only find am old 'Report.wer' file created when I was trying to run RedNotebook in portable mode. I don't know whether this would be of any help but I will paste the contents of this 'Report.wer' file below:

"Version=1
EventType=PCA2

Sig[2].Name=Problem Signature 03
Sig[2].Value=rednotebook.exe

State[0].Value=1
FriendlyEventName=Scripted Diagnostics Native Host
ConsentKey=PCA2
AppName=rednotebook.exe
AppPath=C:\Users\Yo\Desktop\RedNotebook\rednotebook.exe"

I have disabled 'User Account Control'- may this be the cause of the problem? I am not able to create a dump file- many times the process doesn't start at all, but when it starts it disappears from task manager almost immediately so that I don't have time to execute 'Create dump file' command.

Are there any RedNotebook debug versions? Is there anything more I can do to find out what causes this problem?

You could try the non-portable version from rednotebook.sourceforge.net

Asen Anastassov (smaragdus-c) said : #4

I have tested all possible versions of RedNotebook- installer, installer in portable mode, PortableApps version, all the same. Since I can't use RedNotebook i will search for an alternative.

Regards and thanks for the help.

Hi,
I wonder if you aren't having the same problem I have run into a couple times. A data file can get slightly corrupted and RNB will fail upon trying to load it.
Try starting RNB without referencing your old data files. You could point to a new empty location or just move your old data files out of their directory. See if it will start with no data files referenced or in the data directory.

If RNB starts then the problem is in the data. I never totally got my head around the issue I was having. I caused the problem by adding an entry in a future month. RNB does something like neglecting a termination character or some such. Don't quote me but it's something like that. If I do figure it all out I'll report back here.

Can you help with this problem?
