calling a program and file

Asked by Chris Maxwell

Hi, I'm using the portableapps version of RedNotebook on a usb stick. Whichever computer I'm using I want to be able to open a media file on the usb stick from within RedNotebook's preview pane. I can play the media file with the following code

[audio ""///G:\Audio\Music\audio.mp3""]

but it automatically uses the computer's designated media player to play it. I want to use my portableapps version of vlcplayer, also on the usb stick to play the file to maintain a consolidated software package. I can call the player with the following code

[VLCPortable.exe ""file:///G:\PortableApps\PortableApps\VLCPortable\VLCPortable.exe""]

However I can't think of a way to get vlcplayer to run and open the media file automatically. It would be fairly straight-forward if this was a shortcut on the desktop but RedNotebook seems to get confused by the extra sets of speechmarks.

I hope that someone knows the appropriate coding for this - it's probably something simple that I'm missing - because I then want to be able to call LibreOffice portableapps programs and files from within RedNotebook.

Thanks.

I don't think this can be done easily. The simplest way would be to
update the default media player in Windows.

That would be simplest but I'm wanting to use RedNotebook as the centre of a research project where I can store my notes day by day as I make them and then call out to open files in LibreOffice, vlcplayer, etc. It's fine on my own computer which is set up to associate files with my portableapps versions of these programs but when I go into the library, for example, or a computer lab with my usb stick I don't have the authority to change file permissions on these computers.

An alternative to calling the program is with html:

 ''<A HREF="file:///G:/PortableApps/PortableApps/VLCPortable/VLCPortable.exe"b>VLCPortable</A>''

but again I don't know how to add the file to be opened.

That's right. There's unfortunately (or rather fortunately) no easy way
to open external programs from HTML. We could add a "Command"
functionality to RedNotebook, but that would open the door for many
security issues, I guess.

Thanks for your help, and for writing a great program. I can accustom myself to only having call functionality to program-specific documents on my home computer.

Actually, I suppose that I'm trying to use RedNotebook as an alternative to Microsoft's OneNote with some of its media functionality and with a little extra coding required in the edit tab, and for the most part RedNotebook provides what I'm looking for. Having said that I've also used tree-based notepads such as TreePad and cherrytree and being able to see things in tree form is also useful. Do you have plans in the future for providing a tree-based view within RedNotebook showing entries by date in tree-form and by tag in tree-form - perhaps a tab in the left-hand column. What about an optional headline/title for each day's entry for easier identification in a tree? I like the tags but being able to click-scroll through a large number of entries would also be useful. It would also be nice if anchors could be a feature in the edit pane to attach tags to or links between entries on different dates that were associated with each other. Just a few ideas that I hope you enjoy considering.

No, currently there are no such plans. I try to keep the interface as
simple as possible.
