Character Recognition

Asked by Jon

I am new to queXF and am still trying to get a handle on exactly what is supposed to happen.

I built my pdf with queXML and imported the form with banding xml. After importing my form, if I look at it through "Band a form" all of my text fields are purple so it seems they are being recognized and in the right place. If I look at my form through "Page setup", all four corners are detected and everything looks like it's in the right place.

When I print the form, fill in the boxes and scan it back to pdf, I then import the file through "Import a director of PDF files". The form then gets imported and everything seems fine. But, then I go to verify the form data and all of the form fields are blank. I see everything that I wrote into the form fields and the form fields are orange but the form fields used for verification are not pre-filled with what the data is supposed to be. Maybe they're not supposed to be? I'm trying to see what characters were recognized (or mis-recognized) - I need to get a feel for accuracy. One thing to note here is that when I first load the verify page as a verifier, my orange fields are in the wrong place. I have figured out that if I click "Centre Page", they end up being in more or less the correct place.

Also, if I try to download unverified data before it is verified there is no data in the file.

I have tried to import several filled in questionnaires and verify the results to see if I needed to give the system some data to work with before it will attempt to recognize the characters but I have yet to see anything that makes me think it is going through the ICR processing.

After importing and verifying several questionnaires, I did go through the "Train ICR" process but it didn't seem to do anything. I imported more filled in forms and I still can't tell that the application is trying to recognize characters.

I'm sure I am doing something wrong, doing it in the wrong order, or expecting something that the application just doesn't do. If you could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

I am using:

queXF 1.18.1
gs 9.19
ubuntu 14.04

Hi Jon:

- This is expected - without ICR enabled text fields will be blank by default to allow for operator data entry

>my orange fields are in the wrong place. I have figured out that if I click "Centre Page", they end up being in more or less the correct place.

- They should be in the correct place - if they are not lining up I suggest you go to "Page setup" and confirm that the page edge locations are being correctly detected.

>After importing and verifying several questionnaires, I did go through the "Train ICR" process but it didn't seem to do anything. I imported more filled in forms and I still can't tell that the application is trying to recognize characters

- After training you then need to assign the trained set to the questionnaire and import more forms. Then ICR should attempt to detect the written characters
