Qpdfview won't maintain my horizontal view setting

Asked by ralphl

Using the horizontal scrollbar at the bottom I set qpdfview to center the printing on a document so that the mostly empty margins don't show. I then scroll down the document (using the rightmost part of my touchpad) and qpdfview resets the horizontal scrollbar to the left. Actually scrolling down by any means does the same thing. I work on a small laptop screen and commonly center a document not displaying the margins. Having qpdfview negate my setting makes it useless to me. Can you make qpdfview maintain my horizontal scroll setting??
Better yet would be to have built in setting to have it automatically fit the the document to the window with no margins. Some pdf views have this feature.
I am running Xubuntu 16.04 with the qpdfview 0.4.14--the one that came with Xubuntu.

Hello ralphl,

qpdfview should not change your horizontal position due to scrolling. It might however do so upon changing the page. Have you tried to enable the continuous view mode? Also version 0.4.14 should already have a "trim margins" setting, albeit a global one reachable via the settings dialog instead of a per-tab property which was introduced in version 0.4.15. That version also has another option called "minimal scrolling" enabled by default which tries to keep the page-relative position even when jumping to other pages e.g. by following links. You should be able to try it using the PPA at [1] (even though it seems like Benjamin needs to update to 0.4.16 and more recent Ubuntu distributions) or even the daily builds from [2].

Thank you very much for your response. Yes, I was running in Page Mode, and switching to Continuous Mode fixed the horizontal scrolling problem. And I did find the Trim Margins setting under Main menu>Edit>Settings>Graphics. Thank you for pointing this out.
However, I was unable to install version 0.4.15 from Reference 1. I installed the ppa with

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:b-eltzner/qpdfview
sudo apt-get update

I got these errors:
Reading package lists... Done
W: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/b-eltzner/qpdfview/ubuntu xenial Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore potentially dangerous to use.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
E: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/b-eltzner/qpdfview/ubuntu/dists/xenial/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

When I brought up Synaptic to complete the installation, all I found was version 0.4.14. Could you instruct me on how to fix this??

Hello again,

the rather confusion error probably indicates that Benjamin has not
found the time yet to create packages for Xenial Xerus AKA Ubuntu 16.04
LTS, hence you do not find any packages in Synaptic.

I think you have two options: Use the daily builds which are based on Qt
4 instead of Qt 5 and can break at any time or wait until Benjamin has
created and released new packages. (I CC'ed him so maybe he will find
some spare time to help you out.) (Technically, you can also build from
source yourself, but I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't keen on
trying it in the first place.)

Best regards, Adam.

Hi, sorry for neglecting my packaging duties. I have now built packages of the new beta for the lts releases. Thank you for your patience so far.

Can you help with this problem?
