Edit source document (synctex)

Asked by Charles Brunet

It seems I'm no longer able to jump to the source document by double-clicking somewhere in the PDF. Is there something that changed about this in a recent version? I can use the contextual menu to do it, but I preferred the other way.

Hello Charles,

yes, since version 0.4.16, this function was moved into the context menu. I am sorry that this interferes with you preferences, but this change is currently not something that can be configured.

The reasons for doing this were problems with the previous implementation: While it is unbeatably quick to trigger, it was very easy to trigger accidentally - especially during panning which is the default mouse interaction in qpdfview - which would yield confusing error messages. On the other hand it was hard to discover since the only way to know about it was to read the documentation or trigger it accidentally and guess what the error messages indicates about the actual functionality. Hence I decided to move this into the context menu as a compromise w.r.t. both issues.

Do you think this should be configurable? Maybe another keyboard modifier would be a better implementation than just double clicking as a direct access method? Of course, personally I would like to leave it as it is.

Best regards, Adam.

Thank you. This clarifies the situation. It is true that double-clicking was sometime awkward. A keyboard modifier would definitively be the best solution for me. Considering the actual modifiers, ALT+click would probably be the best choice. But meanwhile, I can adapt to the contextual menu.

Hello again,

the current trunk revision contains the addition of allowing to trigger SyncTeX reverse search using a keyboard modifier. This is disabled by default but can be enabled by selecting a valid keyboard modifiers using the settings dialog. (Note however that clicks with the Alt keyboard modifiers are usually intercepted by the window manager to drag windows around.) It would be nice if you could give it a try.

Best regards, Adam.

Wow, you are fast! I'm not really familiar with bzr, but I manager to install it and to compile the trunk version. At first sight, seems to work great. No problem with the alt modifier on my side, because it is alt+middle button that moves windows. Thank you a lot! Btw, qpdfview is my favorite PDF viewer, over okular and evince, partly because of the great synctex support.

Another thing: I do not like the fact the pop-up menu becomes very large when the path to the tex file is very long. Maybe should you only keep the filename without the entire path? Should I open a bug report for that?

I guess it is not worth a bug report. But please give the trunk revision 1971 or later a try where I reduced the menu entry to the file name instead of the full source link.
