information

Asked by Peter Passchier

Big and long time fan of qpdfview. Only missing feature: Information/Properties. If I want some information about the pdf file I'm viewing, I have to open it in (almost) any other viewer to view properties like: (current) Url, Producer, Format, Paper size, and Fonts!
F7 gives some of these (when I discovered them, because you have to go View/Docks to learn about this option), but I would love more. Is it possible to add more info to the Properties Dock??

Hello,

we do not "choose" which kind of information is displayed in the properties dock but rather pass through all the information that the backend provides, e.g. all the meta-data that the PDF document contains. Some other information can be found at different places: There is a special fonts view accessible via the view menu, the tab tool tip contains the full absolute file path and the paper size is inferred via the thumbnail views tool tips. (Paper size is handled that way as it might not be uniform and generally is not really a meta-datum but is rather inferred from the page sizes.)

Best regards, Adam.

Thanks for your comprehensive answer. I guess if you're passing on all information from your backend, there is nothing more you can do, except add/change backends.

I just noticed that pdfinfo (poppler-utils) gave a bit more information, notably: PDF version, Optimized, and it gave the Page size in pts (I guess mm is more desirable, but in my view, when you need it, more information is better).

I do think there is something to be said for centralizing information about a document under a File/Properties menu entry like most others, but I guess most information is available in qpdfview. Do you have the PDF version somewhere?

Hello again,

I just pushed the addition of the PDF version (and linearization and encryption) to the properties to trunk.

Concerning centralisation: The fonts information is slow to load whereas we always display the properties if the dock is visible, hence it has a separate view. As discussed, the page size is not a document property but rather a property of the various pages and is not necessarily uniform.

Best regards, Adam.
