Can you open double-clicked documents in new windows instead of into tabs?

Asked by Jeff S

Everytime I open a window from Nautilus it opens into a new tab which is sometimes not desirable. So I am really liking qpdfview over evince but I couldn't seem to find the setting to change it to always open in a new window besides running command line arguments to do it.

Also is it possible like in evince that if I've previously opened a document it will go to the same page of that document. I turned on keep per-file settings but this still doesn't seem to do it.

Hello Jeff,

it is certainly possible to open documents in new windows instead of tabs, but it is not a setting within the application. The default desktop launcher, e.g. "/usr/share/applications/qpdfview.desktop", provides an action to open a document in a new window which you should be able to select as the default for opening using your desktop environments settings. (Not sure which one you use.) Without the help of your DE, you can still copy this file to your home directory, e.g. "~/.local/share/applications", and modify it by removing the "--unique" option from the "Exec" key. (There is also a tutorial on this on the ubuntuusers.de wiki if I remember correctly.)

Concerning the per-file settings, this should actually do the trick and I am puzzled why it does not work for you. One caveat is that this is based on the file path, so if you move the file it won't remember it. Anything else might be a bug.

Best regards, Adam.

Yeah I know how to modify the default menu items so I've removed the unique and it works no problem.

Also I thought of another question: Is it possible to have multiple keyboard shortcuts for one key so if I put in zoom as Ctrl++ (Ctrl+Shift+=) and Ctrl+= for example. Then both of these would work if input into the shortcut fields and put a seperator inbetween such as a comma or semicolon.

It seems as of now the remember file settings are working. I will submit a bug if I have any issues. I am not sure why it didn't originally work.

Hello again,

as indicated in the online help, it is indeed possible to use several shortcuts for one action by separating them using semicolons in the settings dialog.

Can you help with this problem?
