Some pdf's (esp. those containing large pictures) take long to load; how to expedite?

Asked by thinkpad

I don't think this is a "bug" per se, hence I'm posting this (for now) as a question:

1)
There are some pdf's (esp. those containing large pictures) that take long to load (qpdfview shoes the "clock").

2)
I'm on a dated, venerable machine (IBM Thinkpad X41, pimped afap: 1.5gb RAM, SSD).

3)
In qpdfview, I've got the standard/default settings set for

  a)
Cache size (32mb)

  b)
Prefetch (disabled)

For a given (non-tweaked) pdf-file, what would efficiently & effectively expedite pdf page loading in qpdfview?

For instance, I would doubt that "Prefetch" would help, if the first page contains a large image. Neither that increasing the "Cache size" would.

Hence, I think it comes down to hardware (or improved algorithms/software), but that at present there is nothing I can do about it, right?

Hello,

I think, I'll basically have to confirm your suspicions: The cache and prefetch settings will improve the rendering speed itself, but rather will reduce the need to render the same content again and again by storing the result of the process in memory or starting the process before its results are requested.

Hence, the only real improvement to performance is to be expected from new software releases, e.g. newer versions of Poppler or its supporting libraries. These will also definitely bring performance improvements depending on what version you currently run, e.g. Poppler 0.20 will bring performance improvements for documents with lot of image masks and the upcoming Poppler 0.24 will make much more effective use of multiple processors via threading.

But basically, there is nothing like choosing specific settings that will considerably speed up qpdfview.

Best regards, Adam.
