Install fails on Toshiba Satellite - xorg.conf needs Option "NoDDC"

Asked by Matthew

I'm trying to install Qimo on an older Toshiba Satellite (1805-S253) but the install fails, or more precisely the screen goes black during installation.

I (and others) have a similar problem with these laptops using Ubuntu. With Ubuntu we are able to use the alternate install and select the "install command line" option. From there you update the list of packages, and install xorg, followed by ubuntu-desktop. Reboot into recovery mode. Select fix problem with graphics. Then select command line. And finally modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf under the device section, and adding Option "NoDDC" to correct the problem.

Under Qimo I don't have an alternate install option or install command line only option. Is there another way to force the "NoDDC" option so I can continue the installation or force the option when running Qimo directly from the CD?

Well, I did a work around.

I removed the hard drive from the laptop and used an adapter to conenct it to my desktop PC, and did the installation from there. After replacing the hard drive into the laptop, I performed the steps to boot into recovery mode and add the following line to the xorg.conf:
      Option "NoDDC"

Works fine now, just need to tweek the screen resolution settings.
