How to extract strings from xml file

Hi,
Onboard, the default onscreen keyboard of Ubuntu, gets its layout from an xml file with the .onboard extension. We would like to add some kind of tooltip tags with strings to that file for specific keys of the layout.
Could you please tell us, how to mark these strings in the xml file for distutils-extra to automatically extract them for translation?
Is there any documentation somewhere about how to proceed?
