Editions are forgetting stories

I've been working with some editions with a few dozen stories. Sometimes (no pattern noticed until now) the Headline stories already associated with the stories will disappear.

I get the error message:

Headlines: this post can't be referenced

The stories are definitely still there, and have not been edited.

Any ideas where I can start looking?
