Is there a way to use different e-mail programs with different accounts?

Asked by mikefreeman on 2011-09-26

I would like to monitor both my home and work e-mail accounts through Popper. However, I use Evolution for work e-mail (because of its more business-friendly features), and Thunderbird for home e-mail (because of its user-friendly features). Is there a way to open different e-mail clients, depending on which account they are coming from? I can only see an entry in the Popper Configurator for one client.

If not, could this feature be added? Perhaps instead of clicking the "headline" to open the client, clicking on the e-mail subject line underneath the "headline" when an e-mail comes in could open the client set for that account. That would help me immensely! I'm sure it would be good for others, too. Thanks!

Yes, it is already possible. Please read chapter 4.6 'Script' in Popper's help file. You could write a script that is triggered by the event 'Click on summary entry' or 'Click on email'. If the arguments that Popper passes to the script are not sufficient, wait for the upcoming release 0.30. Popper 0.30 will pass more parameters to the scripts.

Ok. Well, I don't know the first thing about writing scripts, and that's not something I have time to learn, so that will have to wait. I'm sure scripting is the best, most flexible way to do things, but it is a scary and intimidating prospect (at least for me). I'll look for another tool. Thanks for the info!

Hi Mike,

> I'll look for another tool.
O.k. - can you please post the tool you've found, if so. Subject to the condition that it's open-source, too, we can take a look at how it's solved there.

But also don't be afraid of scripting. There are plenty of online ressources like forums, wikis and howtos and a script just to open a email-client depending on the account would be three lines or so.

Let's make a deal: Try to find out on your own how to script your requestion and I'll help you with any step you got in trouble. Just email me to the given email-adress here in Launchpad and Popper will notify me. ;-)
