configuring plymouth greeter to have 1920X1080 resolution

Asked by Padi Phillips

I installed this greeter soon after I saw it featured in OMG! Ubuntu. At the time there was a very helpful tutorial showing how to make the splash screen resolution match the normal desktop resolution. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find it now, and though I have installed the plymouth manager, it doesn't seem to work. I suspect this may be due to a conflict with plymouth greeter, or maybe it just isn't working on my system... or maybe I've not done something. I am somewhat sleep deprived after having spent the night recovering my system from Unity induced catastrophe! Any help would be great, particularly the How-To that was featured. I know it looked very nice when I'd done it, much better than the default 'ragged' splash screen. My friends pare particularly impressed with the Welsh greetings, though there is a slight mistake, it should be 'Noswaith dda' not 'Noswaith da' A slight niggle, but I am a Welsh language teacher! (And, yes, I would be more than happy to provide translations, or attempt corrections if needed.

Padi Phillips.

I don't think it's a problem with plymouth-greeter because it shouldn't affect the resolution (in fact, it doesn't mess with the graphical mode at all and should work fine in text mode also). Try http://www.webupd8.org/2010/10/script-to-fix-ubuntu-plymouth-for.html, hope this helps. Upgraded systems tend to be a mess and systems upgraded to Natty tend to be a terrible mess, so I won't be surprised if it doesn't work.
The Welsh translation can be found at https://translations.launchpad.net/plymouth-greeter/0.4/+pots/plymouth-greeter/cy/+translate, any help will be appreciated.
Unfortunately, your fixes won't get into the PPA soon because plymouth-greeter is not maintained at the moment. The current implementation of plymouth-greeter is flawed, it has turned into a thing that it wasn't expected to become. Code architecture is tailored for a tiny boot script, not a huge framework. This results in really dirty code and lots of ugly workarounds, and it still doesn't work in about 50% cases. It's also known to slow down the boot process.
