How do I add an application to Plank, with the icon of the application?

How do I add an application to Plank.
I have an icon pack installed (Numix icon pack). After adding the icon, how do i make sure that the icon theme is applied on the icon.

I found a simple solution here: http://tech.surveypoint.com/posts/plank-a-simple-dock-for-launching-applications/

"The easiest way to add applications to the dock is to start them from the XFCE Applications Menu. Their icons will appear on the right side of the dock. RMB click on them and select "Keep in dock" to make them appear permanently."

Works fine in Ubuntu. Start application and right click it on Plank.

it seems impossible to install an application menu on plank in Ubuntu 14.04, is it ?
