There's a plank's icon on the left by default. Is there anyway to hide it?

Inside the folder containing all your icons (in your .config/Plank directory), there is a Plank item, if you delete that you should get rid of the icon.

You can also just drag it off the panel. It is faster :)

Dragging off the panel doesn't work for me? (plank 0.11.1)

Also, I can't see a specific plank item within ~/.config/Plank?

This setting is not exposed in the preferences dialog anymore. (since 0.11.0)
gsettings set net.launchpad.
