Running Pithos remotely from 10.04 server

Asked by John Steiger

The setup I have it a server that is connected to speakers where I run the client remotely from a different x environment. This worked when I tested it out with a spare junk laptop running 10.10 desktop. I'm running into a dbus issue starting pithos on 10.04 server. I'm assuming this is because there isn't a local gnome environment running. I was wondering if there is a work around for this or if I should look at modifying the dbus integration to allow running remotely on a system without a full gnome desktop.

I don't know if it's possible to run DBUS over a network. However, if you don't need the media key or dbus-send remote control support, it would be fairly easy just to comment out all the DBUS-related code, as it shouldn't be necessary for most of Pithos's functionality. (Perhaps Pithos should ignore DBUS if it can't connect). You'll also want to disable all the options (notifications / notification-area / screensaver) in the Pithos settings window.

You might also want to look into pandoraweb - https://github.com/jbarciauskas/pandoraweb - based on the Pithos backend. Or, I think it may be possible to run Pithos locally and use PulseAudio to stream its output to a remote machine.

Can you help with this problem?
