Blank Screen When I Try To Watch A Netflix Movie

Asked by Sam Spade

Whenever I attempt to watch a movie on Netflix I get a blank screen. I get the thumbnail browsing screen OK, but selection of a thumbnail gets me to a blank dead screen.

I have no trouble getting streaming content from Amazon prime. http://www.kcba.org/streaming/Test-Streaming.aspx and
http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html also work fine. ' pipelight-plugin --system-check' shows one library missing but documentation says it is not necessary for operation.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04.1 with Firefox 47.0. All add-ons except Random Agent Spoofer are turned off. UA is set to Win 7 64, Firefox 43.

This problem showed up when I re-activated Netflix streaming. Up to a month ago, when I discontinued the service, it worked correctly. This is new since reactivation. Service has never worked since re-activation.

Have purged entire Pipelight installation and reinstalled several times. In all cases, Amazon works, as do test sites, but net Netflix does not.

Have this installation on two laptops, both have the same problem, both OK with Amazon, et al.

I do notice that I get an error with Amazon, however, saying that I should switch to Firefox 47.0 to use HTML5. Could a conflict between Silverlight and HTML5 be causing a problem? I was told that Firefox 43 (which I am simulating) will try to use HTML5 rather than Silverlight.

Does anyone know if Netflix has recently changed something in their system?
