Netflix: Silverlight Installation Problem Error Code: 2103

Asked by Justin Frahm

Hello,

Thanks in advance for the support. I'm having some issues with getting Netflix to work on my Debian Wheezy machine with Iceweasel (firefox) browser. When I log in and select a video, it immediately pops up with an error saying:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Silverlight Installation Problem
Error Code: 2103

You have encountered an issue specific to Microsoft Silverlight, the software used to watch movies on the Netflix website. The issue is often resolved by uninstalling and then reinstalling Microsoft Silverlight on your computer.

To uninstall Microsoft Silverlight on your Windows system...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I installed Pipelight according to the installation instructions and using the ready-made packages and enabling Silverlight. Upon opening Iceweasel, the Silverlight and other installation popups indicated installation of Silverlight5.1. The bubblemark test site, http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html, works perfectly. I attempted downgrading to Silverlight5.0 upon encountering this error with no change as well and subsequently moved back to 5.1.

I have previously installed some similar packages, following the directions at:
http://www.skybert.net/debian/netflix-on-debian-wheezy-64bit/
to install Erich Hoover's netflix-desktop on Debian. This involved a couple extra steps suggested in the comments to do with enabling i386 architecture and adding the ppa key to apt. I got so far as opening the desktop program and stopped there as I realized the desktop ap would not allow me to spoof my location using a browser plugin and also discovered the Pipelite option from another forum. Not sure if there are any conflict issues resulting from this.

I saw the question entitled "243057: Netflix Error N8156-6205" but it didn't help in my case. The xattr test resulted with, "It Works!" and the dpkg command yields:

pipelight-multi 0.2.7
wine-browser-installer 0.7.0~oneiric
wine-compholio 1.7.19-1~ubuntu12.04.1
wine-compholio-amd64 1.7.19-1~ubuntu12.04.1
wine-compholio-i386 1.7.19-1~ubuntu12.04.1

Should these still be Ubuntu? I know they were supposed to be when I set up netflix-desktop but haven't seen any references to cross-purposing distros in the Pipelite installation documentation so maybe that is an artifact of my previous netflix efforts?

The only other plugins I have running are "Hola Unblocker", which spoofs my location to unlock content from various webpages and the recommended "User Agent Overrider" set to Windows / Firefox 29, the only Windows-Firefox option. I tried disabling "Hola Unblocker" with no change.

Finally, I wish I knew a way to make this more brief, but I captured the errors (using '$iceweasel &> pipelight.log &') from a session of opening Iceweasel, loading netflix, selecting a video, generating the error message and then closing the browser. The resulting log is thus:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I haven't seen this particular error code before, so I can only guess and go through the list of possible issues. ;)

It seems you have created a file in ~/.config/wine-wininet-installer.accept-license in your home directory (or you've upgraded from an old version of pipelight). It shouldn't be necessary to use this override, and as it was reported to cause some trouble I would first try without it. Please delete this file if it exists, otherwise just proceed with the following steps.

If its an issue related to Silverlight, and the installation was somehow corrupted, it might help to force a reinstallation of Silverlight in a clean wine prefix. To do that run "rm -rf ~/.wine-pipelight" (or alternatively rename this directory). It will automatically be recreated when you start the browser the next time and visit a Silverlight page.

If disabling wininet and reinstalling Silverlight doesn't help, please try to upgrade all packages. Neither Pipelight nor Wine-Compholio seems to be up-to-date, the latest version numbers are Pipelight 0.2.7.2/3 and Wine-Compholio 1.7.25. Which distribution are you using, its very weird that you have packages installed for two different Ubuntu versions (both oneiric and precise)? Pipelight shouldn't conflict with Netflix-Desktop, so you can keep those packages installed, if you want.

What is the output of "pipelight-plugin --system-check" ? This also sometimes helps to track down issues with the installation, but not all errors are critical. I would recommend to post the full output, maybe we can notice something unusual. ;)

Regards,
Sebastian

Thanks for the quick response.

Removed ~/.config/wine-wininet-installer.accept-license: no change

Removed ~/.wine-pipelight, Silverlight reinstalled upon testing: no change

Upgraded all packages: no change - all version numbers are still the same!

I have two /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ entries that are relevant:

ehoover.list:
#New ppa for Neflix compatibility
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ehoover/compholio/ubuntu oneiric main

pipelight.list:
# New ppa for Silverlight compatibility
deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/DarkPlayer:/Pipelight/Debian_7.0/ ./

I changed ehoover.list to precise just for grins and re-upgraded but still saw no change in the dpkg command.

I have the results of pipelight-plugin --system-check - there is a FAILURE listed - at the bottom of this post but will finish discussion first.

I'm guessing from your response that this is all a huge mess I have created by mashing libraries together to get the netflix-desktop dependencies I needed. My distro is Debian Wheezy but followed some directions to use a couple Ubuntu packages to get dependencies. I have no use for the netflix-desktop whatsoever. I'm thinking the best way to fix this is to start over completely and forgo the netflix-desktop option except that I have no idea how to proceed with that; I am no good at back-tracking with things like this. I've typically wound up taking the nuclear option and just reinstalling the whole OS. What would you recommend here? I have no clue how to find and uninstall the plethora of packages that came along in tow with this whole adventure.

It is generally not a good idea to mix packages from different distributions. I guess the reason was that there were no Debian packages for netflix-desktop. ;) I don't think its absolutely necessary to reinstall the whole OS (, at least until you've tried all other options). I would suggest to remove the oneiric ppa, and only leave the one for Pipelight (which should be sufficient, it contains both pipelight + wine-compholio).

Afterwards do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

(and if this doesn't help)
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hopefully this should get you some newer version of Wine-compholio.

The system-check output isn't really helpful, unfortunately - the only test failure I can see (netapi) can be savely ignored, its not required by any Pipelight plugin at the moment.

Some other suggestions:

* Try to delete cookies in your browser

* Start firefox with a clean profile (you will have to reinstall user agent overrider and select Firefox again). See the following instructions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
Please note that you really need to close all firefox windows, before the profile manager can be opened with "firefox -P".

* If it still doesn't work after creating a new profile - try again deleting ~/.wine-pipelight (with all plugins except user agent overrider disabled).

Regards,
Sebastian

Okay it works! I have no idea why but here's what I did. I went a bit over-kill and did a mega-purge but I don't think that made any difference. The problem seems to have something to do with the profile / cookies situation.

My mega-purge consisted of:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Purge the packages I know I added recently
sudo apt-get purge netflix-desktop
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove pipelight-multi

# Purge all i386 arch packages
sudo apt-get remove --purge `dpkg --get-selections | grep i386 | awk {print $1}`
sudo dpkg --remove-architecture i386

# Remove both ppa's from sources.list.d/
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ehoover.list
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pipelight.list

# Clear the ppa keys
sudo apt-key del 1F691896
sudo apt-key del CAA5DFC8

# Reinstall everything according to Pipelight instructions based on my notes:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/DarkPlayer:/Pipelight/Debian_7.0/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key

# Add new repository to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
cat > pipelight.list <<EOF
# New ppa for Silverlight compatibility
deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/DarkPlayer:/Pipelight/Debian_7.0/ ./
EOF

sudo chown root:root pipelight.list
sudo mv pipelight.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

# Reinstall the packages
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pipelight-multi
sudo pipelight-plugin --update

# Enable silverlight
sudo pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight

# At this point, I saw your response and so did:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
dpkg --list | grep "\(wine-.*-installer\|wine-compholio\|pipelight\)" | sed s/ + /t/g | cut -f2-3;
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interestingly, this resulted in all of the same package version numbers as before:
pipelight-multi 0.2.7
wine-browser-installer 0.7.0~oneiric
wine-compholio 1.7.19-1~ubuntu12.04.1
wine-compholio-amd64 1.7.19-1~ubuntu12.04.1
wine-compholio-i386 1.7.19-1~ubuntu12.04.1

Any idea why I'm not getting the current packages?

At this point I gave Netflix another go. Same story as before.

I deleted all cookies and started a new profile, added the user agent overrider.
Netflix works!

So, I guess long-story-short (too late, I know) I've got to remember to check the basics first (cookies etc.)

Thank you very much for the help!
