Widevine

Asked by Shahram

I have enabled widevine in Lubuntu but the streaming (hoopla digital) is laggy and slow. I have changed the silver light setting as mentioned in other thread but with no success.

Hi,

there seems to be some confusion about the different kind of plugins. Does hoopla digital require Silverlight OR Widewine?

If it requires Widevine then it doesn't make any sense to adjust the Silverlight settings. Moreover when using Widevine (and you haven't enabled Windows Flash), then the playback will happen with your usual Linux Flash plugin. Normally this should be absolutely lag-free, because Pipelight has nothing to do with the rendering process.

If it requires Silverlight then there are several methods which can be used to tweak the performance a bit.

I would suggest you to check:

1.) Which plugin is used for playback? If you're unsure just right-click on the playback window.

2.) Does it help if you run "pulseaudio -k" from a terminal window? Most of the performance issues are related to problems with the sound playback. Since plugins always synchronize audio/video an audio problem can also lead to terrible video performance.

Regards,
Sebastian

Hi,

The required plug-in is widevine. I know that because before installation hoopla was asking for flash plugin and then widevine plugin. The webpage does not allow me to right click on the video stream to find out the plugin. How can I run pulseaudio -k?

Thanks,
Shahram

Hi,

all you have to do is to open a terminal window (should be somewhere in your start menu, the exact location depend on your used desktop environment).

Then type in the following line (or just copy&paste it from here):

pulseaudio -k

Afterwards it is necessary to refresh the website in the browser. Please report back if this resolves the performance problems.

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I tested this and I still have the problem. I also checked a video in youtube. when it is in the regular size it streams fine but as soon as I stream in full screen it start to lower the speed and lags. Hopefully, this might be hint. Thank you,
Shahram

Hi,

which flash version are you using? The windows version through Pipelight, the NPAPI version (Firefox) or the PPAPI version (Chrome) ?

Hi,

then it is the Linux flash plugin which is responsible for the lags. You could try to use one of the following other available flash plugins:

a) either pipelight flash. You can enable it by running:

sudo pipelight-plugin --enable flash

Afterwards you have to make sure that only ONE flash plugin is installed, for example by checking with the diagnostic page http://fds-team.de/pipelight . It might be necessary to uninstall the Linux flash plugin, such that your browser uses the right one.

b) You could test with Google Chrome. This browsers ships Pepper-Flash, which has the same version as Pipelight flash, but runs natively under Linux. Make sure to disable Pipelight Flash again before testing.

Does one of these ideas help?

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for the comment. I badly needed to use my laptop so I installed the XP back again to use it for a while. I will switch back to Lubuntu and try your comments and will leave a comment here to see if this will solve the problem. Thank you again.

Can you help with this problem?
