Installation under Gentoo with portage overlay

Asked by Armin Pech

Hi,

i just want note that there is a portage overlay out for easy installation under Gentoo Linux systems.
The portage overlay is maintained at https://github.com/ryao/pipelight-overlay

The installation is very simple, see https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ryao/pipelight-overlay/master/README:
# Login as root
# Install required tools for overlay integration
emerge app-portage/layman dev-vcs/git
# Activate layman overlays in portage configuration
echo 'source /var/lib/layman/make.conf' >> /etc/portage/make.conf
# Download portage overlay for pipelight
layman -o https://raw.github.com/ryao/pipelight-overlay/master/overlay.xml -f -a pipelight
# Emerge pipelight
mkdir -p /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
echo 'app-emulation/wine-compholio ~*' >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/pipelight-overlay
echo '=www-plugins/pipelight-9999 **' >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/pipelight-overlay
emerge =www-plugins/pipelight-9999

# Activate plugin as normal user:
pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight5.1

I tested the installation and activation of Silverlight 5.1 successfully - see system configuration below.

The Silverlight plugin works fine for me. The movie service watchever.de and http://bubblemark.com/sl3/TestPage.html work great.

I want to request integration of these installation instructions into http://fds-team.de/cms/pipelight-installation.html

Thank you for your great project :)

Cheers,
Armin

That is my overlay. I created it as a temporary place for WIP development of pipelight packaging last year until pipelight was ready for inclusion into the main tree. To make a long story short, the blocker was a structure misalignment bug in wineg++. Binaries built with wineg++ to satisfy Gentoo's QA standards crashed because of it. None of us realized that was the problem until yesterday when some awesome debugging by the main pipelight developers caught it.

Now I am in the process of preparing pipelight for inclusion into the main tree. I am very busy this week, so I will be doing the prepartion work over the next week rather than in one day. The remaining work is:

Making a keyworded snapshot (9999 ebuilds are meant for developers hacking on the code)
Removing obsolete helper files from the ebuild / modernizing src_install()
Gentoo Prefix support, which should be fixing a path in src_src_prepare currently absent from the sed expression
An ebuild for the pipelight sandbox
Post installation messages with tips and suggestions about xattrs, browser user agents and the sandbox
Updating wine-compholio and/or getting the patches merged into Gentoo's wine package
Reviewing how users will receive updates to pipelight or plugins it installs to protect users from maintainer error

Also, for bonus points, I will try to evaluate the usability on Gentoo FreeBSD, but that will not delay inclusion into the main tree.

Can you help with this problem?
