Add Vizzed RGR Plugin?

Asked by Michael Bryant

I originally downloaded pipelight not because I use silverlight - I don't use Netflix or any of those other services - but because I saw that it supported other plugins as well. I thought you could just install the plugin to the wine prefix and have it run, but then double-checking the site I realized I was wrong in my assumption. Long story short, I want to be able to use the (free) vizzed rgr plugin on my linux computers. It is a windows-only plugin that works perfectly in wine with the windows firefox, but that is a lot like the netflix-desktop that caused the development of this project. Here are some links:

The Vizzed home page: http://www.vizzed.com/index.php?ref=298460
The page for the RGR plugin: http://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=8676&ref=298460

Vizzed.com is a website where people can essentially stream old video games, which is legal in the same way that streaming movies online is legal while downloading them is not (speaking piracy here). The owner, Davideo, owns copies of each of the games listed on the site, and users rent them using a site currency called Viz. Davideo follows the rules and I saw him state somewhere that if a company asked him to remove a game(s) from the site, he would. The site also recently passed the 1billion views mark, so its not like this is something no one has heard of.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but here makes more sense to me than the bug tracker. Is this something that could be added to pipelight?

Hi,

I have added the plugin and it will be part of the next release. There is a small problem with their check to run only a single instance of the plugin at a time when it crashed previously. I wrote them a message to find a common solution since I am not really confident with simply breaking their check, but I think we should be able to fix this till the next release.

Which distribution are you using? If the remaining problems are solved before the next release, we can probably also provide some packages, such that you can try it out a bit earlier.

I was certainly not expecting a reply this quickly. I run Arch as my main distribution, but I have a multiboot set up on my laptop with Ubuntu, Debian (Testing), ROSA, Sabayon (Gentoo) and openSUSE as well. I would be glad to help try the plugin out on any of the systems if it would mean it ending up in a release I could install on all of them!

Hi,

the version 0.2.6 of Pipelight now ships support for the Vizzed RGR plugin. Just enable it with:

sudo pipelight-plugin --unlock vizzedrgr
sudo pipelight-plugin --enable vizzedrgr

Nevertheless, it was not completely stable in my tests, but maybe it works for the games you want to play.

Michael
