Dropping half the frames on Netflix

Asked by aeromojito

I have an Athlon 64 X2-6000 CPU with a Geforce 6150 / NVS 210 integrated graphics chip. It plays Netflix in Windows with only 50% or less CPU utilization. In Ubuntu 12.04 I get a frame rate of 12 fps. This is also true of the smooth streaming page that's used as a test. The content such as motion and detail doesn't seem to matter. The frame drops are consistent. Any ideas?

Hi,

the problem could most probably be related to your graphic drivers or graphic card. Pipelight automatically enables GPU acceleration for Nvidia graphic cards, but this only works well, if you've installed all the necessary drivers (especially the 32bit drivers). If something is wrong there, then the programs fall back to software rendering, which is often slower than no GPU acceleration at all.

I would suggest to try out the following ideas (close all browser windows before each step! You can replace firefox with any other browser if you want):

1. Test the performance on Netflix with GPU acceleration disabled:
PIPELIGHT_GPUACCELERATION=0 firefox

2. Afterwards run it with GPU acceleration forced, and visit the Netflix page:
PIPELIGHT_GPUACCELERATION=1 firefox &> pipelight.log
Upload the file pipelight.log (which is created in your current directory) afterwards (for example to http://pastebin.com ).

If there is something wrong with your driver installation, then the log from step 2 should contain some error messages.
We can take a closer look at it and give you some advice, if there is still anything missing.

Sebastian

GPU acelleration doesn't seem to matter.
