Hi,

good question, we've also some internal discussions currently how we're going to deal with such cases in the future.

Unfortunately most plugin auto-updaters do not work properly inside wine, thats why pipelight will always require some kind of special solution. Currently pipelight contains a list of plugins (including version numbers), so it will not automatically pick the latest available version, but instead the version defined in that package.

The solution we're using currently is exactly the same approach as for the regular linux flash plugin: As soon as for example Adobe pushes out new versions, we'll also (within hopefully just a few hours) push out an updated pipelight version, that will be installed together with the regular updates. This means you'll always use the latest flash version, but only when you pay attention to the update manager and always install updates within a short amount of time.

Its not completely clear yet, how we're going to deal with all this in the future. Possible options would be for example automated pipelight package updates, such that a new package is generated immediately after an plugin update, some kind of update-manager included in pipelight itself, ... and maybe a few other possible options.

Nevertheless, one thing which we recommend in general: always use click-to-play for all kind of plugins. Most browsers allow to define exceptions on a per-site-basis, so you could for example add youtube or your other usual streaming pages. This already prevents a lot of attacks, for example when accidentally clicking on a link in a spam mail.
