I can not get movies to play in Netflix. I have Pipelight installed and I receive this error text:

Hi,

please try to disable HW acceleration, as you've already found out (the related bug) its most likely caused by the graphic drivers.
With the latest pipelight version you can just run from a terminal:

/usr/share/pipelight/configure-silverlight

You should see a message that GPU acceleration is enabled, try to disable it (type: "disable") and then quit the menu (type: "abort"). After this the error should most likely be gone.

Some background information: We haven't found out yet what exactly causes the issues, but it seems to be a bug in the graphic drivers that are included in Ubuntu 13.10. Some people got it working by manually installing newer graphic drivers, although this is something I wouldn't recommend for people that are new to Ubuntu. You can subscribe to the bug report you've already mentioned to get notifications about any change, so you can probably re-enable HW acceleration later.

Hi,

the hardware acceleration affects the way how a single frame of the video is displayed. If you are not using hardware acceleration and you want for example watch a movie, Silverlight will need to manually do a colorspace conversion since all video codecs use YUV while the X Server uses RGB to store color information. This will cause some CPU load since every pixel of every frame must go through a series of calculations. Moreover if the video size does not match the size of your video output window, the video must also be scaled up or down by the CPU.

On the other hand all graphic cards support YUV and can do the conversion much faster than a CPU since they have many graphic cores which are optimized for things like this. The same applies to up or down scaling. Since the CPU is not intended for such tasks you can easily overload it with for example 1080p images and the video will be laggy and slow. You most probably will notice this problem in fullscreen mode.
