Blank screen after successfully starting

Asked by Walter Zambotti

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Pipelight 2.1
Wine 1.74
Winetricks 20130707

I'm trying to get LABSIM (www.testout.com) working.

I can successfully login to the site and I can see Silverlight is working and I and i can successfully start:

Theory sessions
Videos
Exams

But I cannot start

Labs

If I attempt to start a lab a new (black/blank) browser window opens and is just sits there.

I have created and taken a look at the pipelight log file but I don't understand it!

What steps should I take to identify the problem and correct it?

Hi Walter,

we already got a similar report, see the following question:
https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+question/237200

unfortunately it seems like there is still somewhere a bug (most probably in wine) which prevents this page from working.

An easy way to reproduce this error is the following page:
http://content.testout.com/ap12ess_cle/sims/xaplus/XSimEngine.html?simpackage=VistaBiosHW&simfile=intro1.html&mainurl=http://content.testout.com/client/programs/Common.SimEngine.BootStrap.xap
which is also available without any login - but unfortunately the debug output doesn't contain that much useful information.

If you've created a pipelight log and think that it contains something related to an error, feel free to share it with us, and we'll take a look at it. Most of the messages are completely unrelated to the "main problem" though. Wine is still incomplete at many points, but most of them don't cause any damange, so it needs some experience to find unusual lines in the log.

Fixing this part of TestOut is definitely on our todo list, but currently its like searching a needle in a haystack, so its not really clear when exactly we've a solution for this ;-)

Hi,

well, in some cases the luck is on our side ;)

We've already figured out what the problem is in wine and prepared a patch. It needs some more clean up (just a matter of hours), but already seems to work very well.

We'll keep you up-to-date when new versions are available for testing.

Volia, there is the patch: http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/100281

Erich E. Hoover, the maintainer of wine-compholio, will do some more tests and release a new wine version which fixes this problem.

Unless someone tells me incorporating the patch can be done without compiling (or is easy), I'm not going to attempt a compile so when a release with this patch is ready I'll grab it then.

Thanks for the positive responses !!!

Latest update. (Close but no cigar)

The 1.7.4 version of Wine now opens the LABSIM lab window and displays content correctly.

However after the content is displayed the window freezes and does not accept any mouse or keyboard input.

I have not tested 1.7.6.

Wine 1.7.4? This one doesn't include the patch yet, I assume you've already updated to the latest wine version including the patch.

I've also experienced this problem during testing, but there is a workaround: Just right click and unselect the option "Embed in browser", refresh the page, and you should get it working in a separate window.

I'm still trying to figure out why it seems to be frozen when embedding is on, it could have to do with the way that TestOut renders multiple Silverlight applications on top of each other.

Ye-ha!!!

Tested on latest version 1.7.6 with LABSIM and all is working as long as the "Embed in browser" option is disabled.

Not sure if disabling that same option would have fixed version 1.7.4!

Hi Walter,

we fixed a problem with the URL handling which affected Testout in Wine 1.7.6, so it wouldn't have worked with older releases.

Michael
