Help with SEF urls

I've looked through the answered questions and it doesn't answer my problem. I feel silly for not being able to do something so simple.

I have mod_rewrite available on my current server. But when I try to add the pre-include $phpns['sef'] = '/'; I get a 404 error when I try to view the full page with comments. Actually seeing the post by itself is fine, but as I said, when I click the link to view comments or the rest of the post, it gives me a 404.

What am I doing wrong?

Melissa, apologies for this extremely delayed response!

Some additional information is needed. First off, are you SURE that
mod_rewrite is on? Sometimes you need to write an .htaccess and
specifically turn it on for that directory.

Could you provide me with the URL of the current site, so I can try it
out myself?

I suspect that this is a problem on your end - I haven't gotten a
complaint like the one you're describing.
