as discussed on IRC... setting a higher dict_size_limit (e.g. 10MB) avoids the possible race by ensuring that the list is never too small. I ran tests against it and have so far been unable to reproduce a crash with the 5.1 patch. It would be great to see both a merge proposal for 5.1 and the same for 5.5
