Context menus of the items of the left panel don't show their "properties"

Asked by Sven R. Kunze

Initial goal: open "P" window of a folder, e.g. Home or "File System"

1) right clicking on item "Home" on the left side doesn't reveal the properties

2) there is no empty space left in the "Home" folder to right-click into it (too many items in this folder) to show the context menu

3) right click on the tab "Home" doesn't reveal it either

4) right click on the table header does the trick

Does it really needs to be that hidden?

This is related to your other question - essentially there are some context functions that require right-clicking on the background of a view. In Icon View this is not a problem even if the view is full. In a full List View, the table headers are treated as background (not obvious) but in a full Column View there is no solution other than to navigate to the parent folder and then right click on the folder icon to get the properties.

It has not yet been decided what the best solution is - it is not desired to give over-large context menus when right clicking on the bookmarks or location bar but certain key functions could be added.

I understand. Thanks so far.

From my perspective, I would except "Properties" at least because that is the main intention when I right-click on an item (no matter if file, component, line, point, or whatsoever).

If possible, you could remove "Open in Window" or "... Tab" and re-introduce this functionality via "ctrl" or "shift" when clicking on "Open". Not sure if that makes sense for the Elementary Design Guidelines, but it could be a compromise to reduce the list.

Another problem with the bookmark property item would be an ambiguity in what it would show - the properties of the bookmark (Its name, target, position etc) or the properties of its target? I suspect you mean the latter. The current PropertiesWindow expects a DirectoryView as a parameter so it would need some changing to make it callable from the Sidebar. However, everything is possible with enough demand so I suggest you raise it as a wishlist bug, making it clear what properties you would want to expose.

Oh, this panel is about bookmarks. I didn't know.

This said, you are right and I would like to gain the properties of the target.

I have to admin I would not understand what the properties of a "bookmark item" would mean because to me it looks just like the folder itself.

I am going to open a wishlist bug.
