Request for file-tagging

Asked by Yee4oo

I would like to be able to tag files and browse by tags in Files.

Could you integrate a tagging tool (like Tagsistant <http://www.tagsistant.net> or TMSU <http://tmsu.org>) with Files?

OS X has something like this; see <https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202754>.

FIles already allows you to tag files with a selection of colours by right-clicking the file you want to tag and clicking the appropriate colour(s). But I gather you want more.

I can't speak on behalf of elementary but I can see little technical or design reason not to improve this feature, but the questions are not the best place to propose such design changes because they get automatically closed. I'll lodge a blueprint for you to look over where you're suggestion would get some more serious thought.

Does this blueprint describe your proposal? https://blueprints.launchpad.net/pantheon-files/+spec/sidebar-tags

If not feel free to modify.

Thanks!

I'd like to be able to tag with arbitrary text and key-value pairs, and have tags "travel" with files if they are moved or renamed. The color tags seem to be lost when a file is moved.

The page at <http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/pages/tagfs.html> gives an overview of some currently available tagging tools.

(I wasn't able to edit the blueprint.)

The page at <http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/pages/extattrs.html> has more information about extended file attributes in general.

It's a known issue that tags do not move with files, https://bugs.launchpad.net/pantheon-files/+bug/1176787. I'd recommend further discussion go either on that bug or the blueprint I created for you. I think I will close this question in favour of those places.

P.S. I do not know how tagging with key-value pairs would fit into marlin, you might want to expand on that in the blueprint.
