flash drive not shown in Files browser

Asked by Fahad

Today I could not open any of my flash drives. They are not recognised by elementary freya anymore. So I thought they are broken but when I tested them in other computer they work. Please help.

Did the problem start after updating Freya? Can you give the full version number of Files - you can get this by running 'apt-cache show pantheon-files' in a terminal.

Do you mean that Files does not list your flash drives under "Devices" at all (even if you unplug and replug them)? Or do you mean you cannot mount them?

Do they appear in the FileChooser dialog when you try to open a file with another application - e.g. Scratch text editor?

Are they listed if you type 'lsusb' in the terminal?

Files relies on gvfs for detecting drives.

Have you tried installing another filemanager e.g. Thunar - does that show the drives?
