Create links on right click ?

Asked by Coeur Noir

Hi,

elementary Freya (0.3) here.

Is there a way to create links while browsing in Pantheon-Files ?

I was expecting something like :

→ right click on a folder → create a link

hi coeur,

Can u pleas explain further? what do you want to do with the link?
and what are u linking files? folder? or do you mean make a shortcut?

if it is link like a shortcut (simbolic link) u can create this with terminal command for the time being.
terminal command if "ln -s /path/to/original /path/to/symlink"

Yes, that's it ! Some files explorer (Dolphin, Nautilus…) offer to create sym-link under right click on a file or folder.

May it be difficult to add this into pantheon-files ?

Hi,

Installed Elementary OS for the first time today. Wow I really love it!! This feature would really go a long way for me too. I have my documents, video's, downloads, music folders on a separate drive. Normally I create a shortcut in my home folder of those folders so they are fully accessible from my home folder.

Even if the existing default folders can have their locations changed when you right click and then select properties. This would be really neat to have.

For me this is also really good feature :) while only working with folders and files there would be good to have ability in File Explorer to create shortcut. And am am not linux geek but it seems to not be hard to implement.

Note - you can create a link in Files by dragging and dropping the file you wish to link to using the secondary (right) button. When you drop the file a menu appears giving you the option to Move, Copy or Create a Link. A limitation (at the moment) is that you cannot create a link in the same folder this way.

There is an existing bug for this feature - Bug #1423105. I will mark the new one as a duplicate.

"by dragging and dropping the file you wish to link to using the secondary (right) button"

Damn precious information, thank you Jeremy !

So adding this function on right click is really not so far.

Well maybe it has become useless knowing the right button drag'&'drop trick ???

That seems to no longer exists : as right click on a folder immediately shows its context and gives no ability to drag & drop.

That does not seem to be the case for me, using the current trunk - there is a perceptible delay on right-click during which drag is possible. Can any confirm this, giving the revision number?

Found a way !

Select your file or folder with left-click,

drag it ( in your actual location ) → a question mark appear on its right bottom corner

drop it → you're then asked if you want to link here or cancel

Finally move your newly created « Link to whatava » wherever you like.

Nice ! Totally hidden but very nice !

Yes, you are right - it does not work with right click if the item is not already selected but there is another selected file. If there is no previously selected file it works without preselecting. It is a bit of a bug I guess.

If, after selecting, you drag with right button you can drop it directly into another folder to make the link.

No I can't : as soon as I hit right button, this opens context menu.

If I try with middle-button, it opens folder in a new tab.

Both are classic behavior to be found in many file-browser.

See #13.

Hmm, perhaps we are using different versions - I am on Loki unstable. For me right-click only opens context immediately if I click on an unselected item when there is a different item selected in the view. Otherwise I can right drag (ie when no selected items or right click on selected item).

I also am in "single-click" mode - but that does not seem to make difference.
