Safely remove drives using Files

Asked by Pranav

I have been using the daily build for a while now and I was wondering how to safely remove external usb hard drives mounted. In my experience, the usb sticks get an eject option in the context menu but the large capacity usb drives just get an unmount option. Does only unmounting suffice to plug the hard drive out?

Also, I dont see any option for formatting the usb sticks/hard drives. Is it something which is being considered because, I dont think elementary daily ships with anything that will allow me to do format. (I mean with a GUI)

Do we not ship palimpsest? If we don't, we really ought to consider
shipping it. It is a wonderful tool.

I am assuming that this has reached / will reach to some elementaryOS developers.

Thanks Allen
