Documentation? Samples? Anything?

Asked by Mike Rowley

I have downloaded the source and built the player, used the FAQs to manage to get flash and images working (H264 MP4s dont work) but the utter absence of documentation, samples or really anything to figure out how to start working the player into a CMS is very disappointing, there was a post about documentation etc from May and it seems nothing has really been done since then.
With the lack of "packaging" if you will and an absolute lack of support, no real SDK documentation, no samples, no forums, no knowledge base, very limited FAQs I am very hesitant to start working with this player only to end up with a project that is going to be orphaned and never updated.
Can anyone shed some light on the future of this project? Is there documentation? Samples? Anything to help us start using this promising piece of open source code?

Thanks
M

Hi Mike,

H264 MP4s should playback ok as long as video support is present on the platform you're using. For example in Windows, there either needs to be a DirectShow filter installed that can play H264, or mplayer should be installed. The values in App.config should also be set correctly to prefer Mplayer over DirectShow (see the change made in revision 22 here: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~opensplash-maintainers/opensplash/trunk/revision/22)

We want to improve the documentation on how to develop the extensions to connect the player to a CMS soon - we know of users developing that at the moment, and we are hoping to be able to include some of that work back into the project for all to see.

Companies such as signagelive, X2O and Comqi are all developing solutions using OpenSplash, and we are expecting that the integration they are doing will go back into the project so we'll be able to package some working examples that can connect to their CMS solutions.

Cheers

Andrew

Hello,

This reply is from 2012!
We are just starting with digital signage and we wanted to use your product, but till now 2015, still no documentation, samples or anything to elaborate how to integrate this with our CMS, although as you say X2O media and other companies have successfully integrated their solutions with you.

So please, help is needed here :)

Hey Yomna, I have implemented the signage engine, with a few minor modifications, into a custom developed interface to manage the system. The OpenSplash code is very well designed and actually very easy for a C# developer to work with. I had little to no C# experience but plenty of VB.Net experience and I had no real issues working with the code.

I do see numerous unrecoverable COM errors from the Flash Player com object, but have built management services to monitor and restart the player on hard crashes and all in all the signage engine performs well for the price. ;-)

I wouldn't hold your breath on docs or samples. I have seen no progression in the 3+ years since I started this project. But I am sure as you have found, there are no other real viable cost effective options.

Thought I would throw my 2 cents worth in the ring. Best of luck.
