New project choices

Asked by John-TN

I may be confused about how OpenShot (OS) is designed to work?

When I am creating a project using AVCHD input files with the intent of exporting them to some other format, which set of parameters do i use is setting up the initial project, the input ones or the output ones?

My way of thinking was to use the input file type, in my case, AVCHD, (1440 x 1080) to set up the project.

Then when exporting, i selected whatever output format I desired and OS would do the conversion?

If this is not correct then I need some guidance :)

John, thanks for the question. Yes, you are correct. When you create a new project in OpenShot, you should select the "project type" that most resembles the files you are intending to edit. For example, if I'm editing wide-screen 720 p video, I would select a project type similar to that. OpenShot will use these settings while you edit and preview your project.

When you are ready to export your project, you can leave your project type the same (and in my example, export 720 p video), or select any other wide-screen format. However, if you edit your video in a 16:9 project type, it then export in a 4:3 type, it will look different.

However, what complicates things, is our simple export settings change your project type during export in order to correctly export to each format (for example, YouTube, Vimeo, etc...). You can only keep your same project type if you export with the advanced settings. Trying to explain this to you just made me realize that we really need to improve this area of OpenShot. =) It is a bit confusing. Thanks.

Thanks,

That would explain why I could not export to another type without closing and reopening the project.

I always save as i go. If i understand what u r saying i would NOT want to save after experting since my project parameters would have been changed by the first export format i selected.

On the "advanced" tab of the export dialog, you can choose any project type. After it exports, your project will return to it's original project type. It is safe to save after exporting. Your project's type can only be changed on the "save" dialog. So, if you want to change your project's type (for previewing and editing), you can click the "Save As..." menu option, and choose a different project type. Hope that makes sense.
