Openshot and VLC

Asked by Erik Happaerts

How can I install/keep VLC together with Openshot on my Ubuntu 9.04 box?

Due to package dependencies Openshot prohibits the installation of VLC from the Ubuntu packages

Hello Eric,

I have had VLC, kdenlive, Blender, Winff etc all running parallel to OpenShot all through the development since version 0.8.2

I have achieved this by having two versions of ffmpeg always installed on my computer.

helen@pliny:~$ whereis ffmpeg
ffmpeg: /usr/bin/ffmpeg /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg /usr/share/ffmpeg /usr/share/man/man1/ffmpeg.1.gz

helen@pliny:~$ dpkg -S /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg
openshot-ffmpeg: /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg
helen@pliny:~$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/ffmpeg
ffmpeg: /usr/bin/ffmpeg

I have made so many changes to my installs of ffmpeg and its related packages, that I have to admit I have forgotten how I arrived at this state each time :-(

But rest assured it is possible, and hopefully will soon be fixed in the main ppa without you having to resort to the arduous task I went through to keep everything running on my machine. :-)

Helen
