can't launch from menu

Asked by BandonRandon

Hello,

I just istalled openshot. I am a fairly new linux user, currently using Linux Mint 7 based on the Ubuntu 9.04. When i try to run the program from the menu i get a terminal window then the following error message "there was an error creating the child process for this terminal" This was gonna be my iniatal problem but then i noticed when i ran the program from the menu and got the error it added a "openshot.desktop" file to my desktop when i clicked on this it opened up a window telling it me it was verified and asked if i wanted to open it. When i said yes it seems to open the program just fine. I told it to verify the file and now i have the openShot icon on the desktop. However, i still can't load it from the sound and video portion of the menu.

Thanks,
Brooke

Very strange. I haven't seen this before. You can always edit your main menu, and drop the icon from you desktop into your menu. That is a pretty easy work around. I will wait to see if other people have had this happen to them also. It might just happen on Mint.

When I release version 1.0.0 of OpenShot, it will create the icons differently, so I'm not too worried about this problem at the moment. Thanks for reporting the bug!

Hello bullygram,

When you say you "opened openshot in admin mode", do you mean you logged in as root and ran it?

You should never run applications like this as root.

This is probably the cause of your problem.

You need to log in as root and use chown to change the ownership of the files you created.

It might be simpler to log in as root and remove all the OpenShot files and directories, and start again from scratch.

If you do this - never run OpenShot (or other non-admin applications) as root again. ;-)

Best wishes, Helen
