Why is Openshot so choppy and slow?

I am running OpenShot 2.2 on elementary OS/MacBook late 2008 8gb's ram. It is super slow and choppy when I insert a video. Any idea why it would still be taking forever to view a video? The audio is so choppy it is unrecognizable.
