OpenShot Video Editor

import video with .264 extension: file type not supported

Total noob to OpenShot.
When I try to import .264 file from camera SD card, I get a "Unsupported File Type" popup saying "OpenShot does not support this file type", however in multiple places in "help" I see references to operations with H.264 video.
Does OpenShot support H.264 video?
If so, what must I do to handle these files?

OpenShot 1.4.3 on Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon, 64 bit.

Any help appreciated.
