Best way to have multiple zoom/pan within a video clip

Asked by Tomas Maly

I'm creating a video tutorial of a piece of web software (from a screencast), and to make it as clear as possible, I zoom and pan the video to follow the mouse cursor. Within a 3 minute timeframe, I might pan around 20 times.

Right now I am taking a zoomed video clip (200%) and using the razor tool to split it. I then add a 1 second mini-clip that does a fast transition from one side to the other of the zoomed video clip (middle left) to another side (top right). I end up modifying the 'layout' of the transitional clip - changing the 'end of clip' keyframe to the desired destination, and then modify the remainder of the clip to that as well (both 'start' and 'end' of clip keyframes).

It seems a bit cumbersome, so I was curious if there was a way to add customized 'keyframes' (perhaps from the clip properties menu itself), so there is more than just 'start of clip' and 'end of clip', but also a custom list of places where I want to insert changes in the zoom/pan of the clip (ie from middle left to top right). It would seem simpler to just have any number of keyframes and just modify the numbers as you go through the list.

But maybe it would be more cumbersome and the simplest way is to just chop a clip into a bunch of different pieces, with 1 second mini 'transitional' clips in between.

Not until now. Libopenshot which will come with the big 2.0.0 will give you
the opportunity to make that with more precision than until now.
