Video Preview Pane remains black

No matter what I do, the video preview pane remains black. At fitst I thought it was the video formats I was trying (all kinds, and all the codecs are on this Mint 15 machine), so I put in static images, and titles.....and put them to the tracks below, starting at the 0 time marker, and still - nothing. Every time I go to run it, the video preview pane remains black (though the audio of the video files I am running is audible). Please help. RVic
