How do i shrink timeline?

Asked by spencer

I made a music video for my band: the clips I imported and loaded into the timeline were longer than the video itself. I'm done making the video, have removed all the clips that I used to make the video, but when I export the final video file (which is a 5 minute music video), the export is kicking out as long as the longest clips that i used to make the video. How do i shrink the current timeline so that what I'm exporting is only the music video itself?

I have done many of the work arounds that I read about and also have looked through more of the threads and I will both explain more and try to pre-emptively answer some of the questions that I saw.
My project is saved as "part of Me" - the final video should be 4 minutes and 33 seconds long. The longest clip that I imported into the timeline for the 'part of me' creation is an 1 hr & 11 mins.
I know there are no hidden files anywhere keeping the timeline long, because before i exported, I removed all the clips that I was no longer using: so literally, the only files on the timeline are:
Track #1: the mp3 for the music
Track #2: a roughly 4 second long clip that plays audio only during the animated title (audio is the only thing being used on that track)
Track #3: is the collection of clips that make up the final 'part of me' video.

I'm exporting as an avi mpeg4: I tried re-saving as (Save as...) a new file name and location - but my video is still an hour plus long.

To some extent, if there is not a way to simply shrink the timeline to match the length of the video (4:32 as opposed to 1:11:45), I have figured out my own work around:
I just created a new project, imported the incorrect original hour long video, placed into the timeline, cut at the desired point and exported that file - for those that may still be experiencing similar problems:
That being said- i would still like to know how to shrink my timeline to fix the correct videos for my future efforts.
Thank you for any help
