Why does OpenShot crash so much using the timeline?

Asked by Dylan Coakley

About 90 - 95 percent of crashes happen when I click a location on the timeline. I find it very annoying because using the timeline is a core feature that is used all the time and therefore Openshot crashes all the time for me.

Why is this the case?

Hi,

This is effectively a strange behaviour specially for Openshot which is known like a stable program. :(

Two tracks are possible:
an dependence is missing, so see here : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1060
an issue with MLT our Video framework and an update is the solution.
And I suspect that you are on Oneiric.

What is your version of Ubuntu, MLT (e.g melt,....), FFmpeg, ?

Thanks.

I installed OpenShot with the .deb from the PPA... the .deb should install all the dependencies.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) 32bit.

FFMPEG version: 0.7.3-0ubuntu0.11.10.1

MLT: 0.7.4-3

I will try to update MLT and see does that fix it.

Okay. Here what you should do for that.

First use the stable Sunab PPA like it is explained here : https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/1861

If you have always this strange behaviour use the svn Sunab PPA same if I don't like to give like advice for simple users. It is reserved for experimented users but at first look, he is doing actually some miracles for people who don't/can't wait. Think to desactive before the stable PPA and after to have done the upgrade (and check if all works) desactive the Svn Sunab PPA and reactive the stable PPA.
After all should be work properly.
Good luck.

Seems to be much faster and stable after upgrading MLT. Thank you! :]

I'm experiencing the same issue on 14.04. I'm assuming that whatever version of MLT Dylan upgraded to, 14.04 is surely using at least that. Are there any current solutions? I've tried 1.4.3 (default with 14.04) and now 1.4.4-alpha. They are equal in regular crashes.

It will be better with the 2.0 as you have never imagined.
