recommended hardware for HD editing

Asked by Harald Spieß

I'm using OpenShot on Ubuntu 10.10 x32.
I'm editing videos shot with a Kodak ZX1 at 720p 60 frames.
The playback of the shot video shippets is very smooth an doesn't draw much processor power.
But when I edit the video in OpenShot the performance of the preview is very sluggish. Also cpu resources are very high (above 50%)
I'm using an Athlon II X2 245 with 2.9 GHz.
Graphics card is onboard nVidia GeForce 8200.

Do you have any recommendation for hardware to use with HD videos?
I could upgrade my Graphics card and or my CPU.
Also the swith to x64 would be possible.

Thanks in advance for your Help.
By the way, I really really like OpenShot and also donated once.
Keep on with the great work you are doing :)

Best regards
Harald Spieß

I just had the idea that the problem might be the video container?
The ZX1 is using a .mov container.
I will try tonight to convert the files into a .mp4 container.
So maybe it is not the hardware at all.
Playback of the files in the preview is perfectly smooth.
Only when playing back the timeline it stutters and i have extreme soundglitches.

I'm having the same problem and have even more hardware than you do. Let me know if reformatting video helps out as I don't think hardware is going to get you there. I've got a I5 3.3ghz with 8GB of RAM and SSD drives and its still unusable.

Changing the Video container from mov to mp4 didn't help. The Video stutters As before.
Any help would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance and best regards

I don't think that my hardware is the problem in editing HD.
I recently tested Kubuntu 11.04 beta with Kdenlive and editing was very smooth.
Editing with KDEn under Ubuntu 10.10 is the same pain as with OpenShot.
So I assume that there is something wrong with the libs.
As Glenn said that he has the same problem with his I5 which is a far faster processor than mine.

I would rate this question as answered, but my problem is not solved yet.
Maybe I'll try tonight Ubuntu 11.04 beta 64bit and OpenShot. I hope this will solve the sluggish performance.
