masking tool? like in adobe after effects...

Asked by Cody Jordan

Is there a way to mask an object or person from one video and overlay it onto a second video? Superimposing this way would be a lot easier than trying to greenscreen everything.

Well, you can use a grayscale image as a mask, but it's a fixed mask (i.e. it won't move along with an object). File > Import Transition, and then drop the transition on a track, and right click on it and "Convert to Mask".

There are 2 other options. 1) Try and chroma-key out the background, which might not be possible, based on what is in the background. 2) Convert the video to an image sequence (i.e. right click on the video in OpenShot, and choose "Convert to Image Sequence". Then you can open up the individual frame images in Gimp (or any other editor) and erase the background. Just be sure the image has an alpha channel, so the erased background will be transparent. However, this might be too tedious, depending on how many frames is in your video.

Good luck!
