OpenShot Video Editor

Video won't play back

I am reading in video from Canon HD camera and it opens and plays but is extremely choppy and causing software to be unusable as an editor. I was primarily looking for something I could edit with on Linux. Is there anything I can do to get the software to play back the clips so that I can actually use it?

One more thing. Just opening Openshot on my system causes it to immediately go to 50% CPU usage. If I actually open a video clip it goes to 100% and doesn't change. Just stays maxed out forever.
